London, 13 January 2021:

UNSMIL yesterday welcomed the Brega meeting between western and eastern Libya to consolidate the 2021 national budget.

”This intra-Libyan cooperation is encouraging and a much-needed step that should be matched by genuine efforts on the political track to form a unified government that will be better positioned to effectively implement the unified budget”, UNSMIL said.

It will be recalled that UNSMIL is struggling as broker to get the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), made up of 75 Libyans, to agree on choosing a mechanism to select Libya’s new unified interim government.

This government, the Government of National Unity (GNU) will be charged with guiding Libya to the planned 24 December 2021 constitutional elections. It is hoped these parliamentary and presidential elections will bring Libya, once and for all, out of the interim political period it has been stalled in since the 2011 revolution.
