London, 8 April 2018:

Khaled Mishri has today won the election to become the new head of the High State Council (HSC). He represents the Islamist Justice and Construction Party.

Four candidates stood for the position; Abdulrahman Swehli, Khaled Mishri, Mohamed Maazeb and Abdulla Juwan. Outgoing head Abdulrahman Swehli was favourite to be re-elected. He won the first round by 37 votes while Mishri came second with 36, Juwan 26 and Maazeb with 17 votes out of 122.

The result took both Swehli and Mishri into the second round as neither had obtained an overall majority over all candidates. Mishri beat Swehli in the second round with a clear margin of 64 to 45 votes.

Swehli had been elected to represent his city Misrata to the General National Congress in 2012 and to the House of Representatives in 2014.

The HSC was created out of the rump of the GNC by the LPA signed in the Moroccan city of Skhirat in December 2015.
