Tunis, 14 March 2017:
Saadi Qaddafi’s murder trial has again been adjourned – until the 18 April – Tripoli’s Court of Appeal ruled today. He is accused of ordering the March 2006 killing of Bashir Al-Rayani, a football coach at Ittihad Tripoli.
He also faces a number of other charges, including illegally detaining people, financial corruption, seeking to suppress the 2011 revolution and illegal consumption of alcohol, all charges he denies.
Rayani’s family has reportedly said they will refuse any offers of compensation or “blood money” from Saadi, who could face the death penalty if found guilty.
The trial is only possible because Saadi was extradited from Niger in March 2014 having fled there during the 2011 revolution.
A widely shared 2015 video shared on social media shows him being tortured by his captors in Hadba prison.
