Tripoli, 17 March 2017:
A Tripoli TV station has retracted its claim made earlier today that three of its journalists had been seized by gunmen who stormed its studios .
The 218 TV Channel had been covering the pro-Hafter demonstrations in Algeria and Martyrs’ squares. The station’s management originally said that the attack on their headquarters and the abduction of three of their journalists had happened at around nine this evening. This was about the same time that the demonstrators in Martyrs’ Square were fired upon.
However, 218 TV later withdrew the statement on the abductions. It is now unclear if any journalists have actually been kidnapped or if the station has back-pedalled its public protest in response to threats to the safety of its people.
A 218 TV photographer was kidnapped three weeks ago but freed a day later, with reports that his capture had been a “misunderstanding.”
