Tunis, 23 March 2o17:
The Secretary-General of the Arab League has presented an apocalyptic vision of Libya if a solution is not found to end the political crisis. Speaking in a television interview yesterday, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit said that without a settlement, the divisions between east and west of the country could see the oil industry being destroyed, revenues being wiped out and Libyans ending up as refugees in camps as in Syria.
In a TV interview, Aboul-Gheit also insisted that the Presidency Council together with its leader Faiez Serraj and its government of national accord were the legitimate authorities in Libya because they were internationally recognised. For that reason, he said, Serraj would represent Libya at the Arab Summit in Amman this week.
The situation in Libya, he added, would be a major subject for discussion at the summit.
Meanwhile in Tobruk, Aboul-Gheit’s special envoy to Libya, Salaheddine Jamali, reassured members of the House of Representatives that it was legitimate and that the political structure set up by the Libyan Political Agreement was transitional.
Jamali also reportedly said he had listened to what members of the HoR had to say and that he would pass on their views and proposals to the Arab League for it to assess and take on board.
Jamali later met HoR president Ageela Saleh at his home in Guba and handed him a letter from Aboul Ghait in which, according to the House of Representatives media office, the Secretary-General “congratulated him for expelling the armed groups from the oil crescent and the victory of the Libyan army in Benghazi”.
It has not been possible to verify this.
