Tripoli, 29 August 2016:
Forces from the Bunyan Marsous operation say they to have captured all of Sirte’s District No. 1 from the so-called Islamic State, and that the militants are now holding out in just a few parts of District No. 3 covering no more than two square kilometres.
Casualties, however, continue to be heavy, mainly as the result of mine explosions. In today’s operations five members of the force were killed and 30 wounded according to Misrata Central Hospital.
Yesterday, the Misratan-led forces said they had captured more than half of District No 3 including the Cordoba Mosque which IS seized a year ago after crushing an uprising in the town against it. They renamed it “Masjid Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi” after the Jordanian militant who was leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq from 2004 until he was killed in a targeted US air raid in 2006.
