Benghazi, 17 March 2016:
UNSMIL chief Martin Kobler has denounced yesterday’s murder of Derna civil society activist Abdul Basset Abu Al-Dahab as shocking and heinous.
Dahab died instantly when a bomb detonated beneath his car. Kobler said he was a man who had worked for years to establish respect for human rights and the rule of law. He described him as typical of the courageous, selfless and dedicated activists who took “enormous risks, exposing themselves to persecution, abduction, even murder”.
He called on all Libya stakeholders and those effectively in control of particular areas to protect human rights activists from intimation or actual harm.
Meanwhile there were unconfirmed reports this evening that the body of Tripoli lawyer and civil society activist Hanan Buharous had been discovered on a rubbish dump in the capital. [/restrict]
