UNSMIL chief Martin Kobler has called for a two-day ceasefire in Benghazi every week so . . .[restrict]that humanitarian aid can be delivered to the war-torn parts of the city.
The idea is in line with a suggestion he made at Tuesday’s Rome conference of international ambassadors and officials designed to plan how to support the new Government of National Accord.
However it has been greeted with derision on social media. The main objections centre around the likelihood of IS and Ansar Al-Sharia terrorists meekly accepting the arrangement.
One person tweeted that Kobler should be the first person to go and try and tell IS not to attack. Another wrote: “This is bizarre. It shows no understanding of the situation in Benghazi”. Another asked Kobler: ”Does this mean you don’t consider those who fight Hafter terrorists?”
Sabri and Suq Al-Hud are the two districts in the city where IS and Ansar fighters are surrounded on land and need to be supported overnight from the sea. Last year there were reported to be a few families in Sabri who had refused to leave their homes. [/restrict]
