UNSMIL reported today that members of the Smaller Convening met in London today for their third session to follow up on the implementation of the 30 August agreement—signed in Tripoli—and to continue discussions on the essential requirements for holding presidential and legislative elections.

During the meeting, chaired by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Ms. Hanna Tetteh, participants underscored the critical importance of unifying the judiciary to ensure successful, credible elections whose results are accepted by all. The members emphasized the need for full respect for the impartiality and independence of the judicial institution. In this regard, they decided to broaden consultations with various components of the judicial community to reach solutions that would enable a unified judiciary to fulfil its role in ensuring the success of the electoral process.

Furthermore, the participants reaffirmed their commitment to engaging with all political actors to garner support for the 30 August agreement, with the goal of conducting presidential and parliamentary elections as previously agreed upon. The meeting concluded with an agreement to reconvene in two weeks.
