Tripoli, 18 August 2015:

Libyan armed forces commander, Khalifa Hafter is in league with IS terrorists in Sirte and Derna . . .[restrict]and has never fired a shot against them, said Nuri Abu Sahmain.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the president of the rump of the General National Congress in Tripoli has written: “There are many indications to show that there is coordination between the terrorists in Sirte and Derna and Haftar’s forces”.

Abu Sahmain added that IS and Hafter were, “getting support from the remnants of old regime currently based Egypt, those who consider the IS fighters as pure and pious youth and justify their crimes.”

Abu Sahmain said that the GNC and the ‘National Salvation Government’ had committed themselves to fighting extremism and terrorism represented by IS.  He urged the UN to recognise and support the Tripoli forces in their fight against terrorism.   He did not specify what form that support ought to take.

However, at the same time he warned against any outside intervention “in Libyan internal issues, violation of Libya’s sovereignty and any attempt to combat terrorism inside Libya without consultation with and agreement from the legitimate authority represented by the GNC and the National Salvation Government”.
