Tripoli, 7 September 2014:
Nearly a hundred of the last remaining Vietnamese workers in Libya have been evacuated.
In recent days, 38 Vietnamese . . .[restrict]working for SONA and Misrata General Construction Company (GCCM) passed through the Ras Jadir border crossing, to be followed by another batch of 46 fellow-countrymen. After reaching Tunis, all flew to Hanoi.
When fighting broke out in Tripoli in mid-July Vietnam had 1750 national working in Libya, according to Vietnam’s Tuoi Tre News with 281 of these based in Tripoli and Benghazi. After the evacuations over the past month, over 1500 have gone home and plans are in place to repatriate the less than 200 who remain.
A bulk of the Vietnamese in Libya—682 to be exact—worked for Hyundai Engineering in Beida and Gudda. Hyundai coordinated their evacuation, mostly via Cairo, over the course of four days in August.
Hundreds of others, in Sirte, Ras Lanuf, Nafoura, El Sharara, Amal, Ajdabiya, Sebha and Obari working for 12 different Libyan companies were also evacuated. The Vietnamese living in Tripoli and Benghazi who did not leave the country moved to safer locations, mainly Misrata. These remaining nationals are to be evacuated in the coming weeks, according to the Department of Overseas Labour Management in Hanoi.
