Tripoli, 9 December 2013:

Qaddafi’s cousin and former leading aide, Ahmed Qaddaf Al-Dam has been acquitted by a Cairo court . . .[restrict]on all charges relating to a gun fight this year, when Egyptian police tried to arrest him, while executing an Interpol warrant for his extradition to Libya.

It was unclear this evening if Qaddaf Al-Dam, who holds an Egytpian residency permit and has claimed to have been born in Alexandria, is still in custody.  He was charged with the attempted murder of  police officers during a dawn raid on his house in Cairo by Egyptian security forces.  Until that criminal case had been resolved, it was not possible for the hearings for his extradition to Libya to proceed.

Qaddaf Al-Dam was one of forty top Qaddafi aides that  Tripoli was seeking to have returned from Egypt so that they face trial for a range of crimes in Libyan courts.

Former Libyan ambassador to Egypt, Ali Mohamed Marya and Mohamed Ibrahim Mansour, who was a senior finance official in the old regime were captured on the same day as Qaddaf Al-Adam and  extradited on 26 March.

Witnesses had claimed then when policemen in balaclavas had raided his apartment, they had been met by a hail f bullets fired by Qaddaf Al-Adam himself and his bodyguards. Besides attempted murder Qaddafi’s cousin had also been charged with possessing unlicensed weapons and resisting arrest.
