Tripoli, 15 December 2013:
Mobile phone links between east and west Libya were severely curtailed today because of damage to . . .[restrict]both the submarine and land cables linking the two regions.
The underwater cable between Khoms and Misrata was, according to the Undersecretary at the Ministry of Communications, Mohammed Belras Ali, damaged by unspecified weather conditions. Meanwhile, the landline, was damaged while maintenance road works at Zliten were being carried out.
Ali told the Libya Herald that maintenance teams had been dispatched immediately to the scene of the ground cable breakage, and that it would be repaired within hours. A maintenance vessel had also arrived at the port of Khoms to start the repair works which, he said, were expected to be completed within 24 hours at most. [/restrict]
