Tripoli, 9 October 2013:
GNC president Nuri Abu Sahmain has been congratulated by his opposite number in the Italian parliament, on the draft law currently before members, which recognises and seeks to support victims of rape and violence.
Laura Boldrini, the president of the Italian chamber of deputies said she recognised the great significance of the new legislation. “ It is an innovative draft law, much needed to address one of the most painful undisclosed aspects of armed conflicts, which could stand as a model also at international level”.
Her support was delivered in a letter handed over to Abu Sahmain today by the Italian ambassador in Tripoli, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi. Boldrini also wrote that this July, prompted by the planned Libyan legislation, the Italian parliament’s foreign affairs committee had adopted an unanimous resolution, committing the government to an international campaign against rape and sexual abuse in conflict areas. Boldrini added that the resolution also meant that Italy would work with affected countries, to do justice to the victims of this violence. Boldrini concluded her message by hoping that Congress would soon enact the draft law. [/restrict]
