Tripoli, 15 June:
It was still uncertain this evening whether or not a strike by pilots and ground handling staff would . . .[restrict]be staged at four Libyan airports tomorrow.
Naser Amaar, the operations manager at Ajwa Aviation Services at Tripoli Airport said: “It is not clear that the strike is going ahead. I hope to know more later.”
The 12-hour strike is scheduled to start tomorrow (Saturday) at 0600 hours. It will reportedly affect both Libyan Airlines and Afriqiyah Airways flights from Tripoli, Benghazi, Misrata and Sebha. Besides pilots, some ground-handling staff are also expected to be involved.
According to the Libyan Pilot’s Union, the action is being taken in protest at the government’s failure to merge the two Libyan airlines, in line with recommendations from the NTC. In a statement the pilots said they apologised to travellers for taking the action. “However it is the only possible option for the time being, to make our voices heard in a matter that will benefit all Libyans”.
