Sirte, 25 May:
A major explosion took place inside the base of the Sirte Revolutionary Brigade last night, killing seven people. An . . .[restrict]unknown number of people were also injured.
Three members of the brigade, which is under Interior Ministry control, are known to have died, along with a further two men from the Al-Fergan tribe and two from the town of Derna.
At present, contradictory information is emerging about the cause of the explosion.
One version of events holds that a fire started by metal-soldering in the base’s workshop got into the weapons store, triggering the blast.
Others have claimed that the base was in fact attacked by RPGs, which hit the weapons store. The identity of the attackers in this second version of events is unknown, but inevitable speculation has emerged that they are Qaddafi loyalists.
