Tripoli, 1 April 2016:
Day Three of the Presidency Council’s presence in Tripoli saw an apparently relaxed prime minister-designate . . .[restrict]Faiez Serraj venturing out of the Bu Sitta naval base and going on a walkabout in Martyrs’ Square.
Serraj first attended Friday prayers at the Mizran Mosque then dropped into the Aurora coffee shop in Algeria Square. Later he went down to Martyrs’ Square where he met and chatted with people.
The atmosphere was every bit as relaxed as yesterday when a succession of top officials and council leaders arrived at the naval base to meet him. Today, dressed in a suit with a bulky jacket, Serraj posed for selfies and was hugged by one man. He shook hands with policemen and militiamen. His security detail generally stood back and did little in the way of filtering of those whom Serraj might meet.
Later in the day there was another noisy demonstration that moved between Algeria and Martyrs’ squares with several hundred people shouting their support for the Government of National Accord and yelling “Bye Bye” to Khalifa Ghwell, the ousted leader of the rebel Tripoli administration. As earlier in the day, the mood was good-natured and happy.
In the evening a small firework display was staged near the castle. One man with his family in the nearby children’s play area said that in good weather, they had always driven there. But today, he said, things were different. They seemed better. He said even his young son and daughter were happier.
