Tunis, 5 December 2015:
The Tripoli authorities have closed both the Libyan land borders with neighbouring Tunisia.
The move comes . . .[restrict]on the day that the Tunisian authorities had suspended all Libyan airliner flights into its main airport, Carthage, in the capital. Flights to Sfax were allowed to continue with Libyan carriers rerouting their Tunis flights to the southern Sfax airport.
The speculation is that the Tunisians had taken the step as a security measure coming after the events in Paris and more pertinently the suicide bombing of a bus carrying Tunisian Presidential guards in Tunis.
Tunisia had also considered introducing visas for Libyans.
Reports from the border say that returning Libyan crossers were being allowed home and Tunisians in Libya were being allowed across too. Equally, Libyan transport vehicles were also being allowed back through.
However, no new travellers were being allowed through from either direction.
Reports from the border crossing say that there is not much traffic crossing due to the season, and the insecurity and blockages of the coastal road. The opening of flights by Libyan carriers – averaging about 4 flights per day – has also reduced the traffic flow at the land border crossings.
