The fate of a Sufi imam seized in Sirte by the Islamic State (IS) forces and . . .[restrict]condemned to death on charges of sorcery was unknown this evening.
Sheikh Said Almadani was reported to have been condemned by the Islamic Court to be beheaded and “crucified “ today after Friday prayers.
Sufism is regarded as heretical by most Islamic fundamentalists, including both the Salafists and IS, with the accusation of sorcery often levelled against its followers. The more hardline fundamentalists, such as IS, also believe that sorcery merits the death sentence. In any event, it believes it has the divine right to kill anyone it opposes or who opposes it.
IS even regards Salafists with hostility despite sprining from the movement. Earlier during the week, Sirte’s Islamic court issued an order seizing property and assets belonging to Salafist sheikhs.
In the tradition of taking they can grab, IS also yesterday were reported to have broken into government warehouses and seized stores of food and supplies. [/restrict]
