The General Directorate of Environmental Sanitation Affairs at the Ministry of Local Government announced yesterday the results of its annual water quality assessment of summer beaches for 2026, during a press conference held in Tripoli.
The Director General of the Department stated that the monitoring teams of the Department carried out an intensive laboratory analysis campaign of seawater samples from several coastal sites.
Based on the results of the analyses, a detailed technical report was submitted to the Minister of Local Government, and with the issuance of decisions by the Minister, the beaches that are not suitable for swimming were identified in a number of municipalities, namely: Tajoura, Souq Al-Jumaa, Tripoli Central, Al-Andalus District, Zliten, Sabratha, Tobruk, Al-Khums, Sousse, and Al-Zawiya Central.
The results presented during the press conference showed that the percentage of beaches that are suitable for swimming reached 83%, while the percentage of unsuitable beaches reached 17%.
The Director General confirmed that the General Administration, in coordination with the departments of environmental sanitation affairs in the municipalities, will follow up on the implementation of the decisions, by obliging the municipalities to prohibit swimming in the specified locations and install signs, in cooperation with the branches of the Municipal Guard to take legal action against violators.
He explained that the publication of these results comes from the principle of transparency and the keenness of the General Administration on the safety of citizens and vacationers, and its commitment to its supervisory role to protect public health and the marine environment.
