Tripoli, 6 September 2015:

In yet another twist to the continuing General Congress’s tortuous relationship with the United Nations . . .[restrict]Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), GNC President Nuri Abu Sahmain has now threatened to take legal action against it because it had been in contact with military officers from the west of Libya without the permission of the GNC or the army.

In a strongly-worded letter to UNSMIL chief Bernardino Leon made public yesterday, Abu Sahmain complained that while the GNC had sent a large delegation to Istanbul to meet him and discuss its involvement in the Dialogue process, he had since heard that UNSMIL was making arrangements for a meetting with a number of “Revolutionaries’ Army leaders” from Tripoli, Misrata, Zintan, Gharyan and Zawya without giving notice to the supreme commander of the Libyan army – himself.

Any such meetings would be unlawful and legal action would be taken against the officers involved and against UNSMIL and Leon if they did not quickly justify their actions, he warned.   They had violated Libya sovereignty, he said adding that this could undermine efforts to end Libya’s divide.

The GNC might “bring the case before justice and take legal actions locally and internationally,” he threatened.

Following the publication of the letter, it is reported that there have been anti-Leon protests in Tajoura demanding the GNC suspend its involvement in the Dialogue until Leon recognises its “legitimacy”. [/restrict]
