Tripoli, 7 June 2015:

Police in Benghazi say they have captured a major bomber and assassin who is also . . .[restrict]believed to be connected to the kidnapping in Tripoli in April last year of the Jordanian Ambassador.

Talal Mohamed Ali Al-Jazwi, said to be a non-Libyan, is reported by Benghazi’s Counter Crime Agency (CCA) to have admitted his role in the abduction of Fawaz Al-Aytan. The ambassador’s driver was shot and wounded in the abduction

Aytan was held prisoner for a month by his captors. Linked to Islamists in Jordan, they demanded the release of Libyan militant, Mohamed Dressi, who was sentence to life imprisonment in Jordan in 2007 for planning to bomb Amman airport.

Although Jordan denied any link, Dressi was released. The Jordanian ambassador was then freed by his captors.

Jawazi, not thought to be his real name, is reported to be a professional terrorist and bomb maker. According to the CCA’s Facebook page, he has admitted being paid LD 50,ooo for the ambassador’s kidnapping and of being involved in numerous bombings and killings.

Among these, allegedly, is the planting of a bomb outside a tobacco kiosk in Benghazi (a favorite target of militant Islamists) in January 2014 which resulted in the death of bomb disposal expert Rageb Elabbar. He is also said to have admitted planting bombs at a number of shrines and of being responsible for a bomb outside the main court in Benghazi during Ramadan.

The CCA did not specify when then this happened. A bomb outside the city’s north courthouse in July 2013 caused major damage and wounded 10 people.

Jazwi is also said to have been carrying fake papers when he was arrested.

It has not been disclosed how and when he was captured. It is thought that Jordan may demand his extradition. [/restrict]
