There are reports from Algiers that the Algeria government is seeking to step in and . . .[restrict]mediate in the conflict between Tuareg and Tebu in Obari.
It is understood that the Algerian Tuareg will work with their fellow tribesmen in Libya while Tebu elders from Chad are slated to talk to their cousins in Libya.
The clear concern seems to be that the inter-tribal violence in southern Libya, which began last September, could overflow into neighbouring states. A ceasefire agreed between Tebu and Tuareg elders reportedly broke down because some Tuareg didn’t feel they were bound by it
.
Obari remained tense today.
“It is estimated of some 11,000 refugees left Obari since the clashes, they are living in nearby towns in a dire and inhumane conditions” Mustafa Orghn, Tuareg Journalist told the Libya Herald.
Meanwhile, the roads to Ghat and deep south west remain closed because of the fighting in Obari
“The town is now 80 percent empty of its residents, as roads remains closed, as well as the border gate to Algeria, Tripoli remains the only air route” Orghn explained. [/restrict]
