Water has returned to the Jebel Nafusa region after a two and a half month . . .[restrict]cut, said Director of Ghariyan’s Industrial River Company Ali Habashi has said. It was predicted that water would not be restored until the end of February.
While much progress has been made, there are still some repairs that need to be made in order to provide water to the region efficiently, Habashi said.
“We’ve solved the problems in the Beni Walid area and have increased pumping. Water reached Tarhouna last week, but we’ve found more damage to the pipes, which has caused us to lose a lot of water,” Habashi explained.
Habashi went on to say that engineers had spent the past few days repairing the pipes and that they were able to start pumping again on Monday toward the Abu Ziyan tank, which supplies the network for the interior area of the mountains.
“It will take about 72 hours to fill the tank, and then we’ll be able to pump water to the interior,” Habashi said.
The water cuts were the result of fighting in the areas of Beni Walid and Baab Al-Sukhna, which led to the withdrawal of the security forces from some of the fields in the area. This led to two and half months without water for Bani Walid, Tarhouna, Ghariyan and the rest of the towns in the Jebel Nafusa area. [/restrict]
