Tripoli, 4 February 2015:
The General National Congress has selected Awad Abdul Saddeq as its new First Deputy President. . . .[restrict]He replaces Ezzidin Al-Awami who takes the view that Congress no longer exists and is now nominated as Libya’s ambassador to Rome.
Abdul Saddeq, who represents Jalu, Awjila and Jakharra, is a member of the Islamist Wafa bloc.
Meanwhile Congress president Nuri Abu Sahmain is said to want to leave state politics. Pro-Libya Dawn media have reported him saying that he will not accept any future state position. However, he would be happy working for an NGO.
In another development, Congress passed a law allowing intelligence agents to arrest people. Congress spokesman Omar Hemidan said, surprisingly, that this was the case in most countries. The decision had been supported by 75 out of the105 members he claimed had attended Tuesday’s session.
It has not been able to verify the numbers. Hemidan usually avoids mentioning them and TV cameras covering Congress meetings always avoid panning around the Congress hall to show who is attending. [/restrict]
