Beida, 13 December 2014:

The US fast food . . .[restrict]retailer Kentucky Fried Chicken, better known as KFC, says it will take legal action against outlets in Libya illegally using its name and claiming to operate under license from it.

“There are no official KFC restaurants operating in Libya. We can confirm that none of these are legitimate and are not endorsed by KFC,” said a statement from the company. “As these restaurants in Libya are not legitimate KFC outlets, we will be taking immediate legal action against the company and individuals claiming to have rights to open KFC restaurants in Libya now or in the future.”

KFC repeated an earlier statement that it had no plans at present to enter the Libyan market.

Although KFC says it intends “immediate” action, it is not clear how, in the present situation, it intends to take legal action in Libya against those using its name.  However, there wold be nothing to stop it pursing them in other jurisdictions.

Since the revolution there has been a wave of restaurants and other service industries opening that have been stealing the identities of well-known international companies.
