Thinni expected to go to Cairo for talks with President Sisi tomorrow

Benghazi, 6 October 2014:

The Prime Minister Abdullah Al-Thinni is reported to be going to Cairo tomorrow for talks . . .[restrict]with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. According to Buwabat Al-Wasat, Thinni, who will lead a major ministerial delegation, was invited by Sisi.

Egypt is known to be extremely concerned about the situation in Libya and any talks would be expected to focus entirely on the subject. The Egyptian authorities have firmly backed the Tobruk-based House of Representatives and the Thinni government, and it is widely believed that it has supported Operation Dignity as well.

It has been claimed that it provided support for the operation, notably logistical support to UAE aircraft to bomb Libya Dignity positions in Tripoli – a claim Cairo has denied.

There are now unconfirmed reports that an Egyptian vessel docked at Tobruk at the end of last week with supplies of arms and vehicles for the Libyan army, specifically for Operation Dignity.

Meanwhile , it is also reported that Thinni has accepted an invitation from Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir for talks in Khartoum.

Last month, Thinni accused Sudan of providing arms to Libya Dawn forces following the seizure of arms on a Sudanese plane that had landed in Kufra. Sudan has denied the allegations and last week announced that it recognised  the House of Representatives as Libya’s sole legitimate legislature.  The announcement, accompanied by another Sudanese denial of the allegations about sending arms to Libya Dawn, is said to have been the result of strong pressure on Khartoum from Saudi Arabia.

No date has been set for the visit. Bashir is currently staying in Mecca where he has been performing Haj. [/restrict]
