Tripoli, 25 July 2014:
The Ministry of Defence released a statement condemning the ongoing hostilities taking place in both Benghazi . . .[restrict]and Tripoli and requesting that all sides immediately stop the “senseless fighting.”
The Presidency of the General Staff of the Libyan Army added that those fighting are not adhering to the orders of the legitimate leadership of the state and of the Defence Ministry.
It condemns, the statement reads, “all terrorist acts of bombings and assassinations targeting the military, judiciary, media, religious leaders, other leaders and activists.”
The Ministry commissioned the Security Rooms in Benghazi and Tripoli to secure the cities and especially the airports and prepare them to be operational again. Especially important was the securing of the city of Benghazi so that the House of Representatives can safely convene there by 4 August.
Furthermore, it called on all special forces, military units and brigades to place themselves under the leadership of the Presidency of the General Staff, await instructions from the commanders in charge and be prepared to build one national force working together to secure and stabilize the nation.
Finally, it commended the efforts of community leaders and elders for their work to mediate and bring reconciliation in the midst of the current crisis. [/restrict]
