Tripoli, 28 June 2014:

The new Mayor of Sabratha, Hatem Mustafa Al-Zawaghi, has been inaugurated . . .[restrict]at a special ceremony at the Sabratha’s famous Roman theatre.

The majority of the country’s new mayors, chosen through election or consensus by their municipal councils, have so far been sworn in at the Waddan Hotel in Tripoli. However Zawaghi was installed at the site because it had been the place his relative, Mohamed Salem Al-Zawaghi, took office as Mayor of Sabratha and Sorman in 1964. He was the last mayor.

Fifty years on, Mohamed Salem was present at Thursday’s ceremony which which was deliberately designed to illustrate the continuity of Libya’s democratic tradition after 42 years of the Qaddafi regime.

Mayors have also recently been chosen and installed in seven other municipalities:

  • Al-Saih: Abd Al Fataah Jalal
  • Ain Zara: Abd Al Wahid Ballok
  • Rajban: Abubaker Mohamed
  • Rahibat: Abd Al Hamid Al Ashtar
  • Janzur: Beled Ajeli Abd Al Salam
  • Sorman: Mohmed Koni Ali

A number of other new municipal councils will be sworn into office and mayors elected during Ramadan.  This will include Misrata, according to Otman Gajiji, Chairman of the Central Committee of Municipal Council Elections (CCMCE).

Fourteen other municipalities are at the stage of registering candidates and voters, including Bani Walid, Tarhouna, Jadu, Mrada, Azzizia, Abughain, Musaid, Brega and Kufra, he said.  Elections there would be held after Ramadan, around the first week of August, with expected results in mid-August.
