Tripoli, 28 June 2014:
Tripoli’s Al-Ittehad handball team won the Libyan championship on Friday after defeating Benghazi’s Al-Nasr in the . . .[restrict]final, 29 – 26. The game was held in the 17 February Hall in Tripoli’s Sports City.
”The match was played without spectators, for the safety of the players,” the head of the Handball Federation, Omar Saktah, told the Libya Herald.
Ittehad qualified in the semifinals, after Zliten’s Al-Nasr team withdrew from the semi finals. Nasr defeated Benghazi Al-Jadida 30 -29 on 19 June.
Although Ittehad won the cup, Benghazi’s Al-Najma won the Handball League this season; Ittehad came in second. ”Both teams will represent Libya in the African championship next October,” Saktah said.
The federation, he added, had faced challenges this year notably a lack of funds and sponsorship. “We haven’t received the budget yet. So we missed both the Arab youth championship this month in Jordan and will miss the Arab Junior Tournament in Tunisia in July,” he explained. [/restrict]
