Municipal elections in the southern town of Qatrun were postponed today after they clashed with a . . .[restrict]re-run of elections to the Constitutional Assembly.
The head of the Higher National Elections Committee (HNEC) in Qatrun, Abdulrassul Hassan Mohammed, told the Libya Herald that the municipal elections would be held in a week’s time, on 3 May. He added that “some other organisational issues” had also been a factor in changing the date.
HNEC announced that it would restart elections today to vacant seats in the Constitutional Assembly in some areas of the country on Wednesday.
Boycotts by the Tebu minority in the south against elections to the Constitutional Assembly in February left 13 of its seats empty and has meant that, despite having held its inaugural meeting, the assembly cannot yet begin its work. One of the seats, in Kufra, has since been declared by the courts as been filled. [/restrict]
