Tripoli, 27 September 2013:

Nato is examining a request by Ali Zeidan to assist in Libyan security institution building . . .[restrict]according to a NATO statement.

The Prime Minister met the Secretary General of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, in New York on Wednesday to discuss the subject on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Ramussen later tweeted: “Just had good meeting PM Ali Zeidan. We discussed how NATO can assist Libya in reforming its security sector.”

The NATO statement does not mention in what way the organisation, as opposed to individual NATO members, could help.

In New York, Zeidan also met with the foreign ministers of NATO members France, the UK, Italy and Germany, along with the Deputy US Secretary of State, who collectively assured him that they would continue with the pledges made at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland this summer and help Libya rebuild its security institutions by providing training and technology.

At the G8 summit the US, UK and Italy agreed to help train some 8,000 Libyan military personnel. NATO member Turkey is also participating.  The first trainees are due to go to Turkey, Italy and the UK within a month, the Prime Minister said before leaving for New York.

The Prime Minister arrived back from New York this evening. [/restrict]
