Tunisia has announced that it categorically “rejects anything likely to threaten Libya’s national and territorial unity”.
The announcement follows the decision by . . .[restrict]tribal leaders and politicians in the country’s east to set up a Cyrenaica Transitional Council in opposition to the NTC.
In a statement on its website, the Tunisian foreign ministry said that Tunisia “urges the different components of the Libyan society to preserve the gains of the revolution of 17 February and the country’s integrity and sovereignty.”
The ministry also called on “Libyan brothers to reinforce their cohesion around the Libyan Transitional Council” which it called “the only legitimate” representative of the Libyan people. It urged them to support the NTC at this “crucial stage” of the country’s history.
It added that Tunisia fully supported “the efforts of the Libyan legitimate authorities aimed to secure their country’s unity, security and stability” and it had confidence “in the capacity of the Libyan people to achieve their democratic transition and the noble objectives of their revolution in a climate of national cohesion, concord and unity”.
