Libya Herald exclusive: Responding to the prime minister’s call yesterday to the private sector and banks to do more, leading businessman Husni Bey responds

Leading Libyan businessman Husni Bey says the Libyan Audit Bureau should make a public apology for its wrongful accusations against him and his companies (Photo: Social media).

I have formally written to Libya’s Audit Bureau requesting an official public declaration to clear me, my family members, and the directors of companies in which I hold shares. This appeal comes after the Bureau’s previous false public accusations dating back to October 2015, which were made maliciously through the abuse of power, without proper investigation and with no transparency especially regarding allegations of customs duties evasion amounting to about US$ 11,000 (equivalent to 15,000).

The Audit Bureau is an official body that must carefully study its actions and statements before implementing and announcing them. It must be held responsible for its actions so that they do not repeat this slanderous action against any other Libyan or company in the future.

False accusation of money laundering
Adding harm to injury one of our (HB Group) companies, Siran Pharma, was accused falsely of money laundering. The Bureau had mistakenly linked Siran Pharma with Siran Tyres Imports, a company with no connection to the HB Group.

The Bureau having confused Customs Declaration No. 3230, related to Siran Pharmaceuticals Co, part of the HB Group, with Customs Declaration No. 3239, pertaining to Siran Tyres Co, a company that was managed by a Mr Najeeb A. A. This company was accused of money laundering but has no connection to HB Group.

I am calling on the Audit Bureau to publicly publish a statement on their website officially absolving my team, my family members, and the falsely accused companies from any wrongdoing. This should be a publicly released official statement like the way they publicly made the accusations in October 2015 and rectified three weeks later in November 2015.

The Bureau subsequently annulled all freezes and restrictions through Decision No. 431, correcting the errors. However, despite repeated requests, the Bureau has not published the annulment on its official page, which I consider a violation of my legitimate rights.

We are surprised by the Bureau’s hasty public accusations and their subsequent reluctance to publish corrections. This has caused significant harm to our reputation, which is more damaging than any financial loss.
