The Tripoli-based Libyan government hailed yesterday the availability of free corneal eye transplantation for free to all Libyans across the country.
Corneal transplantation in all cities of Libya becomes a process available for free to the Libyan patient in all cities of Libya.
Celebrating the new policy, Tripoli Eye Hospital said the procedure has now become available and free across all cities to all those ‘‘who used to pay thousands abroad to obtain this service’’.
The announcement is part of the Tripoli-based government’s ‘‘localisation of healthcare’’ policy to make more healthcare available to more Libyans locally at greater convenience and no cost to patients or the state.
Medical Convoys visit peripheral areas to perform healthcare
Yesterday, a ‘‘Medical Convoy’’ set off from Tripoli Eye Hospital to the Al-Khoms Teaching Hospital to perform surgeries for eye patients who need corneal transplants, cataract and glaucoma removal, strabismus correction operations, and tear duct surgeries. The Tripoli Ministry of Health said it expects the convoy to perform 280 surgeries.
The Director of Tripoli Eye Hospital and Head of the National Authority for Corneal Transplantation, Rania Al-Khoja, said, “The hospital called the convoy that arrived at Al-Khoms Hospital ‘‘Noor Al-Hayat’’ (the light of life) and it is a therapeutic support convoy, including the best medical team capable of performing various eye operations.”
The Eye Hospital had run another medical convoy four days earlier, which succeeded in conducting 24 corneal transplants, inside Al-Khoms Teaching Hospital.
The ‘‘Visiting Doctor Programme’’
It is noteworthy that the conduct of this convoy comes in implementation of the ‘‘Visiting Doctor Programme’’ launched by the Minister of Health in August 2022, with the aim of providing appropriate treatment within Libyan territories and exchanging experiences between Libyan doctors.
