Tripoli, 26 November 2017:

Tripoli again faces major water shortages a month after the same armed gang cut supplies to the capital demanding the release of its leader Mabrouk Ahnish.

The pro-Qaddafi Ahnish, a member of the Magarha tribe from Brak Al-Shatti, was captured last month in the Wirshefana area along with several Sudanese fighters. He was handed over to the Rada (Deterrence) forces of Abdul Rauf Kara which continue to hold him.

The Man-Made River (MMR) authority has protested Saturday’s attack by Ahnish’s followers on control rooms in the Al-Hasawna-Al-Jafara sections of pipes. No details were given of what the gang had done.

Last month, water was cut to some parts of Tripoli for almost a fortnight after Ahnish’s supporters attacked an electricity control room in the Shwerif area halfway between Tripoli and Sebha. The MMR repaired that damage but an engineer admitted that the work had been done quickly for fear of poor security.

Today the MMR put out a statement insisting that the authorities and indeed, ordinary citizens had to do far more to protect the MMR network from interference, which it said was threatening national security.
