Banks in Jufra were sent LD13 million in cash today, the first such delivery to the town for four months. The shipment was flown in from Tripoli on a cargo plane which was carrying an armoured truck with the cash. It was accompanied by officials from the Central Bank of Libya (CBL).
The Joumhuriya Bank has been supplied with LD 10 million and the North Africa Bank LD 3 million. Local officials said the cash was already being distributed. It is a welcome relief for Jufra which, like much of the country, has suffered from a dearth of hard currency in recent months.
The banknotes were part of the LD 250 million shipment delivered to the CBL three days ago. The bank said this was the fourth consignment in a month to arrive at Mitiga airport from the British printers.
The CBL has said the money will be distributed to commercial banks throughout Libya, but the focus will be on the hardest-hit regions. LD 40 million is also being sent to Sebha.
