Libya’s fate not in its own hands says former UN envoy Ibrahim Dabbashi

Tunis, 21 January 2017:

Libya’s former UN ambassador, Ibrahim Dabbashi has protested that foreigners, not Libyans are directing the country’s future.

“Our fate is decided in London, Washington and New York, supported by Paris, Rome, Berlin, Madrid” he wrote on his social media page, adding that these governments had sided with the forces of destruction. “[They] are trying to convince us that we walk towards the abyss.”

Dabbashi maintained that Libya was in danger of disappearing from the political map. It had become a victim of  blackmail and humiliation, suffering poverty, hunger, disease, extreme cold and darkness with cash unobtainable from banks.

He also warned that with the arrival of Donald Trump in the White House he foresaw a change in Washington’s approach to the Libyan crisis and a change in Russian policy as well.

He said that Libyans needed to recognise that it was up to them to solve their own problems because in the end, nobody else cared.

Dabbashi believed the Presidency Council epitomises unsuccessful foreign interference. It  now lacked “the courage to recognise its failure. It should withdraw from the political scene”.

Dabbashi has little reason to like Faiez Serraj and his PC colleagues, who fired him last May.  He finally cleared his desk in the New York UN building only in November when his diplomatic accreditation was removed.

In a farewell letter to the then UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon he launched a bitter attack on UNSMIL and its chief Martin Kobler.

He said they were part of  “Troika” with” two unaccredited ambassadors who are taking decisions on behalf of the Libyan people, assisted by a dialogue committee dominated by foreigners of Libyan descent and radical Islamists, who lost the elections and people’s sympathy in Libya.”
