Yesterday, UNSMIL condemned the central Tripoli militia clashes on the second day of the Eid celebrations. The sudden clashes sent families out entertaining children scurrying for safety as gunfire could be heard across the city.
“The United Nations Support Mission in Libya is deeply concerned about the armed clashes that took place in the capital, Tripoli, on April 11, and calls on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid escalation or reprisals.
The Mission condemns the frequent use of violence as a means of resolving disputes, as it endangers the safety of civilians and undermines the fragile security situation. It stresses the need to hold those responsible to account.
Chronic insecurity is a result of the continuing political crisis and the erosion of institutional legitimacy. “It serves as a reminder of Libya’s need to prioritize holding elections in order to establish legitimate governing bodies capable of extending state authority and upholding the rule of law.”
