The eastern based National Development Agency announced last Sunday that it is currently preparing technical plans and programmes, as well as the necessary arrangements for the actual launch through international companies specialized in establishing the Sirte Commercial Port Free Zone.
Strategic project
It reported that this project is considered one of the most important giant strategic projects supporting societal stability and the national economy in the city of Sirte and the central and southern region – as well as at the national level.
The National Development Agency said the project to establish the free zone, which is listed under the name (Sirte Commercial Port Free Zone), was strengthened by the decision of the eastern based Libyan prime minister No. 71 of 2024 issued on 20/03/2024.
Project handed over to unnamed coalition of foreign companies
Accordingly, it explained that the project was handed over to a coalition of foreign companies made up of the most specialized and giant companies with great related experience during the companies’ representatives’ visit to Sirte last week.
Aims of project
The National Development Agency said the free zone will aim, in the contents of its programmes, to encourage transit trade and commercial and service exchange. It will also seek to transfer and localize technology and knowledge in a way that supports stability and the national economy. The port project will also contribute to containing many youth energies in the city that the labour market requires, and among other strategic goals to support youth and combat unemployment rates in Libya.
