Speaking at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly yesterday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the importance of opening investigations into the causes of the collapse of the Derna Dams.

He said that those who lost their lives in Derna as a result of massive, unprecedented floods were victims of conflict, indifference, and the failure of leaders to find a path to peace.

The Secretary General said Derna represents a sad picture of the state of our world, where there is a flood of inequality, injustice, and an inability to confront challenges.

He added the two dams of Derna collapsed after years of war and neglect, and the waves are still washing bodies ashore, after thousands lost their lives in Derna as a result of unprecedented floods.
