London, 30 July 2021:

A shipment of 100,000 litres of medical grade oxygen arrived by land yesterday from Egypt in an urgent effort by Libya to solve its acute oxygen supply at its Coronavirus Isolation Centres.

Libya’s Ministry of Health says the oxygen supply problem is especially acute in the western region, which suffers from an exacerbation of the epidemiological situation and an increase in oxygen consumption.

The oxygen shortage has come as the Indian/Delta variant has taken hold causing infections to rise sharply. The shortage has occurred despite numerous new oxygen plants being installed and old ones being maintained across the country over the last few months.

The Ministry explained that the imported shipment is based an agreement reached between Libya’s and Egypt’s the Ministers of Health regarding the urgent supply of oxygen from Egypt.

The Ministry said more daily shipments will enter and their rate will increase in the coming days, and they will be directed immediately to areas that suffer from an oxygen shortage.
