London, 3 March 2021:
The outgoing Faiez Serraj-led government passed a decree (216/21) on Monday sanctioning the purchase of anti-Coronavirus vaccines from:
- Pfizer-Biontech
- Oxford-AstraZeneca
- Johnson and Johnson
- Moderna
The leaked decree, dated 1 March, also stipulates that any other vaccines endorsed by WHO, the U.S, British or Libyan drug approval agencies can also be imported.
On 1 March, Libya’s Tripoli based National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) – and partnering entities – launched an online anti-Coronavirus vaccination registration website in anticipation of the arrival of the country’s first vaccine batches.
Twelve million vaccines are expected to start arriving at the end of this month.
The news will be welcomed by many Libyans who had expressed to Libya Herald their concern that their ineffective government and squabbling political elite might force them to take either the Russian or Chinese vaccines.
These are not desired by Libyans who feel as an oil producing/exporting country they should afford the best – and they regard the western vaccines as the best.
