Tunis, 8 September 2017:
Reports in a number of Libyan media outlets that UN Special Envoy Ghassan Salamé said that the UN intended to send peacekeeping forces to Libya have been firmly denied by the UN special mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
In a statement today, it insisted that all that Salamé had said was that, with UNSMIL progressively returning to Libya, it was increasing its staff there including security staff for the UN compound in Tripoli.
“UNSMIL is a political mission and its mandate, as set by the UN Security Council, does not allow the presence of a peacekeeping force (or as mentioned Blue Helmets) to operate in Libya,” the statement read.
It repeated its commitment to Libya’s sovereignty, unity and integrity.
