Tunis, 24 August 2017:

The House of Representatives (HoR), the Beida-based interim prime minister Abdullah Al-Thinni and the UN Special Mission in Libya have added their voices in condemnation of yesterday’s terrorist attack on the Fugha checkpoint on the road between Abu Grain and Sebha. Nine soldiers and two civilians were murdered in an attack believed to have been carried out by regrouped fighters belonging to the so-called Islamic State.

Expressing its condolences to the families of those who died, the HoR called on the Libyan National Army (LNA) to eliminate the terrorists who, it said, were intent on destabising the whole of Libya, not just the south .

Thinni, too, said they had to be destroyed.

For its part, UNSMIL described the attack as “gruesome” and “savage”.

Others, including boycotting residency Council (PC) member Ali Gatrani have blamed the PC and its government of national accord for the slaughter. Gatrani, who in fact supports the LNA, said that the PC was to blame because it had not provided weapons to the Libyan army to fight terrorism. HoR member Ali Saidi from Brak Al-Shatti said the GNA and the Bunyan Marsous operations room were responsible because they were working with Qatar which, he claimed, was linked to the terrorists.

Prominent State Council member Bekgassem Gzeit, however, reiterated the views of PC head Faiez Serraj who yesterday said the attack demonstrated the urgent need for the Libyan military to be united.

Condemnations yesterday also came from Khalifa Hafter, HoR president Ageela Saleh, and PC member Fathi Majbri.

The Egyptian government has also condemned the attack.
