Serbia’s ambassador to Libya, Oliver Potezica, has died from injuries sustained in a car crash in the Tunisian town of Sousse.
The Serbian foreign minister Ivica Dacic has confirmed the news to the state-run Tanjug news agency. Mr Potezica died in Sousse hospital early this morning but the car crash was yesterday, it reported. He was driving alone, and no one else was injured in the accident.
The recent history of Serbia’s diplomatic mission to Libya has been marked by tragedy. Potezica survived an attempted abduction in November 2015 near Sabratha while traveling between Tunisia and Tripoli and escaped unharmed along with his wife and two of his sons.
However, two Serbian employees, Sladjana Stankovic and her driver Jovica Stepic, who were in a separate vehicle, were seized by militants. They were later killed in the US airstrikes on the Islamic State camp in Sabratha.
Born in 1953, Potezica is survived by his wife and five children.
