Tunis, 20 January 2017:
The car bomb outside a Benghazi mosque today in which former interior minister Ashour Shuwail and his son Sulaiman were among as many as 17 injured injured has been widely condemned, including by Presidency Council (PC) members and UN special envoy Martin Kobler.
The PC said bombings were contrary to the teachings of Islam and contradicted basic human principles, they said, insisting that such acts only bolstered their determination to fight terrorism across Libya,
For his part, Kobler described the incident as a “terrorist” attack and expressed his sympathies to the victims’ families.
Meanwhile boycotting PC deputy Ali Al-Ghatrani, who met Kobler yesterday, declared that the perpetrators would not escape justice or punishment, promising to personally help find those responsible.
The car bomb detonated as worshippers left the Abu Hourira mosque in Benghazi’s Al-Majouri district. The intended target is unknown, but it is thought highly likely it was Shuwail.
