Tripoli, 31 August 2015:
Efforts by local resident and fellow councillors to persuade the mayor of Sabratha, Hatem Al-Zawaghi, . . .[restrict]not to resign have failed, the Libya Herald has been told. Elections for a new mayor are now being organised and are expected to take place in a few weeks’ time, according to an official from the Central Committee for Municipal Council Elections.
Zawaghi, who took office in June last year, told colleagues some weeks ago that he wanted to quit, complaining at a lack funds to run the administration. He is also alleged to have cited personal reasons.
The other councillors and local citizens tried to convince him to stay, even telling him to take a short sabbatical in Turkey to think it over.
However Zawaghi stuck to original view and has given up.
Hussein Duwadi has been asked to act as mayor until the new election takes place.
Zawaghi’s resignation in not the first in Sabratha. Abbas Al-Fegi previously resigned as a councillor. Zawaghi has not, however, resigned as a councillor. [/restrict]
