Benghazi, 21 July 2015:

A mortar round, thought to have been fired from Daesh lines, has hit the Benghazi Medical . . .[restrict]Centre, injuring a foreign nurse working in the kidney unit.

The Indian nurse, whom the hospital has refused to name for security reasons, was injured in the face when the room in  kidney dialysis unit was hit on Sunday.  She underwent emergency surgery to remove shrapnel from her nose and jaw.

The nurse, who is said to be in her late 20s, is one of a number of Indian medical staff who have refused to leave Libya, despite repeated warnings from their embassy.

There are unconfirmed reports that the victim of the mortar attack may have been one of the three nurses who fell victims to a scam which, because the banking system has virtually collapsed,  promised to repatriate funds to India.

Police and hospital security staff moved quickly to trace the fraudster and recovered the LD7,000 of which the nurses had been cheated. [/restrict]
