Tripoli, 1 May 2015:
The teaching of two subjects, French and Citizenship, has been have been stopped in schools under . . .[restrict]the control of Libya Dawn.
An official at the Tripoli-based Education Ministry, Salem Ramadan Omran, announced yesterday that this year there would be no final exams in either subject. He said that suspension of both the classes and the exams would also apply next year. Notice of the change, he said, had been sent to the education authorities in all municipalities.
Omran explained that the move was putting into effect a decision taken at the ministry last February. He gave no reason for the change. The Citizenship curriculum has included history and civic responsibility.
A reason being given by some sources is that there are not enough teachers for with subject in most schools, although while this is entirely plausible for French, it does not ring true as far as Citizenship values go.
A lack of teachers for French is said to be also the case in eastern Libya.
